• On a gondola in Venice

Often referred to as the Bride of the Sea, Venice is without doubt one of the dreamiest proposal cities in the world. The quaint cobblestone streets are surrounded by gentle canals that shimmer by day and night, whilst quintessential Italian love songs can be heard on every corner, played on old-school accordions by charming street musicians. Though wandering the enchanting town and Piazza San Marco is romantic enough, there’s nothing quite like sharing a bottle of chilled Champagne with your intended whilst floating down the narrow canals on a traditional gondola, complete with your own personal gondolier who can sing “That’s Amore” as you pull out the ring.

• From the top of the Eiffel Tower

Perhaps the most iconic location in the world to pop the big question, a proposal high up the Eiffel Tower is as romantic as it gets. Being such an enormous monument surrounded by stunning manicured gardens, there are plenty of options to choose from when dropping to one knee, whether you choose to climb to the top for a breathtaking Parisian backdrop, or stay at ground level to look up at Eiffel’s glittering night-time lights, the City of Love and this helplessly romantic landmark is a one-way ticket to wedding bells. What’s more, the city is full of gorgeous restaurants to raise a glass once your loved one has said “yes”, and to seal the deal with a French kiss.

• From the Gem of the Aegean

Santorini in Greece, also known as the Gem of the Aegean, has long been considered a romantic destination, but it’s only in recent years that this stunning island has primed itself for world-class proposals. Though the views across the aquamarine ocean from the volcanic crater in Oia are enough, plenty of exclusive restaurants and private verandas are on hand to light up your big moment with candles, torches and world-class Greek cuisine. Or for a more traditional proposal, head to the highest point of Oia town where a stunning small church just happens to sit.

• In the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle

Nothing says fairy-tale romance quite like Neuschwanstein Castle in Denmark, the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle and Disney World’s Cinderella castle. Though visitors aren’t allowed to explore inside the castle, local wedding planners can put together special proposal packages for exclusive one-hour morning tours before the crowds arrive outside, complete with a horse and carriage that’s stocked with roses and chocolates on your return. Just remember to ensure Cinderella’s slipper – or rather, her diamond ring – is the right fit.
