Back To Times Of Old

True to the Fairmont brand philosophy, however, throughout this stylishly contemporary property, Fairmont Singapore remains committed to embracing the unique culture, traditions and heritage of this fascinating locale while maintaining luxury and relevance. With an aim to heighten the overall level of guest comfort whilst enhancing the Singapore experience, Fairmont Singapore embarked on a comprehensive multi-million dollar renovation project, starting in August 2013, transforming various spaces throughout the hotel, including all guestrooms in the North Tower.
This major project (by award-winning design companies Hirsch Bedner Associates and EDG) not only breathed new life into this landmark hotel, but also embraced and imbibed in Fairmont Singapore’s rich heritage and personal connection with the locally celebrated culture. This revamped design has been largely influenced by the unique Peranakan culture of the early Straits Chinese immigrants who settled in Southeast Asia, whose adoption of local customs and traditions resulted in a unique hybrid culture that is still part of Singapore’s heritage — with newly renovated spaces collectively featuring a modern Peranakan interpretation and highlighting a vibrant amalgamation of design elements that are distinctly and authentically local.

Boasting an overall neutral, earthy colour scheme, the hotel’s vibrant new lobby comes adorned with an intrinsic compilation of art installations that stunningly illustrate the vivacious mix of cultures inherent in this cosmopolitan metropolis. The lobby’s focal piece is a striking chandelier designed by Petra Dickova and created by Lasvit, a leading Czech Republic design and manufacturing firm renowned for its contemporary light fittings and architectural glass installations. Titled “Playing with Wind” and measuring 3.5m in height, this magnificent chandelier illuminates the lobby with an assembly of 800 Bohemian crystal glass balls, each individually hand-blown to perfection.

With this, a refreshing slew of new furnishings, plus the adjoining all-new, stylish and modern cocktail bar, Anti:dote, guests can expect a brand new welcoming experience in the lobby, coupled with technologically advanced enhancements, such as the launch of new wireless check-in facilities. Singapore’s heritage has particularly influenced the personality of Fairmont’s guestrooms and suites — and even more so now. Constituting the majority of rooms (totaling 371) in the revamped North Tower, the newly launched Fairmont Premier Rooms have been specially designed with elegance and a comfy residential feel, imbued with modern amenities and innovative features. Simultaneously, they incorporate stylish accents of Singapore’s heritage, drawing inspiration from Peranakan culture. The overall design is timeless and classic, with charming hints of iconic Peranakan elements injected into the room’s visual aesthetics, balanced with a contemporary, fresh flair.

Culturally inspired design elements inducing a nostalgic feel include bespoke carpets and curtain sheers representing a bold interpretation of Peranakan lace and plantation shutters designed as windows dividing the bathroom and bedroom. Ultra-contemporary elements, however, include a leather-clad work desk, a rain shower innovation that aerates and pulverizes water for a finer spray and signature room amenities such as a NESPRESSO coffee machine. Staying true to a unifying theme throughout the revamped North Tower, the lift lobby and guest corridor areas strikingly showcase figurines illustrating historical scenes captured in still frames — masterfully depicting daily life of times past, while other heritage-inspired elements include traditional local snacks transformed into three-dimensional art pieces and bespoke patterned carpets revealing hints of ethnicity with traditional design motifs.

Guests are thus invited to experience the refreshed, restored and redefined Fairmont Singapore and celebrate this exciting milestone in this landmark hotel — now shining with even more brilliance and ramping up its homage to Singapore’s unique heritage, culture and history.
