A DAY IN THE LIFE
Set amidst a jungle of bursting palm trees and blossoming flowers, the resort embraces the beauty of Bali’s luxuriant landscapes. Trickling fountains send hypnotic ripples throughout lily pad dotted ponds beneath enchanting wooden bridges, while the sweet and sensual scents of rich oils dance with falling frangipani flowers. The vivid tropical gardens wane as I make my way towards stunning Mediterranean-styled white stone passageways, forming a labyrinth of brilliant winding paths – a reflection of classic Greek architecture, shaded by dangling vines.
Colourful wooden doorways suggest there is a world on the other side of this dazzling stony maze. I open a turquoise door and enter into a world of rich polished woods, alang-alang grass and a perfectly sculpted garden courtyard. I am in one of Karma Kandara’s 46 private beach villa residences, where Balinese décor unites with modern flair. Three striking pavilions are made from natural, local materials, seamlessly merging into the surrounding greenery and rocky outposts. A sleek timber deck frames the immaculate infinity pool, which shares the panorama of endless jungle and the sparkling Indian Ocean beyond.
The living area breathes with the spirit of Balinese design – open plan, bright and spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing the breath-taking landscape. I can see the sirap wood-tiled roofs of neighbouring residences, yet the expert arrangement ensures each villa maintains the utmost privacy. The fully equipped kitchen offers a sparkling silver contrast to the rich, contemporary furnishings of the living room; upholstered in hues of chocolate, cinnamon, copper bronze and amber. The position of an inviting bed showcases the views of a green and blue horizon, whilst the adjoining en-suite bathroom is a haven of opulent marble, natural wood and rustic, hand-hewn stone. A spectacular stand-alone bathtub competes for bathing preferences with the outdoor rain shower. This is first class, redefined.
OCEANFRONT INDULGENCE
With each villa boasting its own private infinity pool, you need a very good reason to want to leave your expansive compound of grandeur. In fact, Karma Kandara has many reasons, and one of them lures your every glance. Each villa and amenity points towards the breath-taking cliff’s edge, where 180-degrees of blue-on-blue brilliance leads you to the picturesque private sandy bay of Nammos. With the sun still high in an immaculately blue sky, the beach club’s dazzling white sands and fresh seafood platters are beckoning.
I arrive at the cliff’s edge, and a clever inclinator takes me down the sheer cliff face, revealing panoramic views over the rugged coastline and its turquoise lagoon. Set within the resort’s secluded beach cove, Nammos Kandara is the ultimate in private beach shack chic with its thatched roof, bamboo veranda and rustic outdoor furniture. The sand is like powder between my toes, and the glittering emerald sea is beautifully calm – perfect for an afternoon snorkel. But first, my taste buds are yearning for one of Nammos’ Chakra signature cocktails. The Sacral Shakra offers a zesty sweet and sour kick while the Heart Shakra is light and refreshing, infused with vodka, melon and citrus flavours.
An Ibiza-inspired soundtrack completes the picture.
With sun-kissed skin, I’m craving a bit of revivification, and Karma Spa offers just that. The revolutionary ‘Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion Facial’ delivers therapeutic grade oxygen and rejuvenating serums to reduce blemishes and fine lines after just one session. Suspended at the top of the cliff, the spa is a cliff-top oasis with its open-air pavilion, infrared detox sauna and Himalayan crystal salt pool. An all-white stone wet room with attached steam and ‘sea spa tent’ offer back-to-earth treatments.
EVENING EXTRAVAGANCE
The sun is slowly sinking towards the glimmering horizon, and there’s no better place to enjoy the show than at di Mare – one of the most dramatically situated dining venues in Bali. Serving up a lively mix of Mediterranean cuisine with a New World, Pan-Asian twist, the stunning whitewashed gourmet restaurant teeters 85 metres above the cobalt lagoon. Try Executive Chef Miles’ grilled king prawn salad, where the prawns have been freshly caught from the nearby waters of Jimbaran. Finish on a deliciously sweet note with the Manjari Raspberry Moelleux – a delightfully soft sponge with a raspberry heart, served with a raspberry sorbet and a chocolate crunch.
For an added treat, meander up to Temple Lounge located on the rooftop of di Mare. Boasting the highest point of the resort, this Moroccan style bar offers the perfect spot for star gazing and cocktail supping. Liven things up on a Tuesday and enjoy the sensuous Salsa dancing classes, Sangria and traditional Paella. This exciting evening is just one of the many events on the Karma Kandara calendar, joining Monday Night Movies at Nammos, Stand Up Paddle Yoga in the private lagoon, and the globe’s hottest international DJs on Saturday nights.
