Austria

Famed for its palaces, castles and mountains, Austria is a popular tourist destination all year long. For ski lovers, a trip to the Alps during the winter is ideal, but during the summer, travellers visit to marvel at historic cities such as Vienna, Salzburg and Hallstatt.

A trip to Austria must include a visit to the capital city of Vienna. Here, feast your eyes on the grand design of The Hofburg Imperial Palace that was a home to Europe’s most powerful royal family until World War I. Even larger is Schönbrunn Palace, home to 1,441 rooms and comparable to Versailles in France. The small village of Hallstatt is also an interesting destination when you’re in Austria. Found in the Salzkammergut region, the village is famous for its salt production and is where you get to see a prehistoric man preserved in salt.

Cuisine in Austria includes famous dishes like Vienna Schnitzel and Wiener Schnitzel. Enjoy a plethora of good food and drink at Vienna’s oldest restaurant, Griechenbeisl. Open since 1447, the restaurant has been a favourite for great luminaries such as Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Strauss.

When it comes to lodging, historic venues are always popular, like the atmospheric Weisses Kreuz Hotel in Innsbruck that used to host 13-year-old Mozart. But for a room with a stunning view, the DO & CO Hotel in Vienna is located right in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
