Franklyn Yulius Kocek – General Manager at The Stones Hotel – Legian Bali, Autograph Collection®

Q: Can you tell us how you initially entered the world of hospitality? Was it a childhood dream?
A: My father had a career in the hotel industry, and he was a general manager at the time. I drew inspiration for a career in the same field as him. I also have always been fascinated by Bali, its culture, traditions and people since childhood, which has been a source of inspiration for me.

Q: According to your press release, you transformed The Stones Hotel – Legian Bali, Autograph Collection® from a “recovering hotel” into a “thriving success story.” What have you learned from the experience?
A: The pandemic taught all of us in Bali and the tourism industry worldwide that we must have better financial management and a better investment strategy. Having the right strategy to face significant challenges is essential and should be a well-planned long-term investment for the future.

Q: Are there any upcoming plans or programmes at the hotel that you can share with our readers?
A: We are celebrating The Stones’ 11th anniversary this year. On 15 October 2023, we provided internal recognitions to our associates for their dedication and loyalty to the hotel. With our core value of Putting People First, we are committed to providing the best support to all our associates.

As for the brand experience during our anniversary, we are hosting an exclusive photography exhibition titled Indonesia and Nusantara by Daniel Kordan, an internationally renowned photographer, and a traditional Sundanese music performance by Saung Mang Udjo.

Q: For those who have never been to The Stones Hotel – Legian Bali, Autograph Collection®, how would you describe this hotel?
A: We have The Five Sensorial Experiences at The Stones, which include Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste. Each sensorial experience has its uniqueness. In terms of service, we have a very high engagement rate with our guests. Some guests have stayed with us 14 times in the past 11 years, which indicates their loyalty. You’d have to visit our hotel to experience it.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the hospitality industry?
A: One of my concerns is the rapid growth of digitalisation. Therefore, I emphasise the importance of maintaining a balance between digitalisation and virtues, humility and personal interaction.

Q: What is the most memorable or rewarding moment you have experienced in your career?
A: Seeing our associates happy at work instils a sense of entrepreneurship and ownership in them, which can ultimately serve as an asset in their careers and their personal lives, enabling them to apply what they have learned and create additional income outside of their jobs.

Q: What advice would you give to those looking to pursue a career in the hospitality industry?
A: Working in the hospitality industry requires passion. Therefore, keep learning, continually challenge yourself and never stay in your comfort zone. Career progression is like climbing a staircase. Love your job, set clear dreams and goals and perform your work with love and passion.
