André Priebs – General Manager at Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort

André Priebs started his journey in the hospitality industry when he was 14 years old, and at 21 years old, he became the youngest hotel general manager in Germany. His passion for the industry has taken him to Russia and Ukraine in 2004, where he managed hotels and prestigious projects in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. He left Europe for Asia in 2016, before finally settling in Bali in 2018. As the general manager of Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort, he shares his insights and wisdom about the industry.

Q: How did you first decide to get into the hospitality industry? Has it always been your passion?

A: I first decided to get into the hospitality industry when I was 14 years old, as I started working in restaurants, bars, and clubs to earn some pocket money for my fun time. When I was 18, I had the opportunity to do my military social service in a Youth Hostel, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the hospitality business and apply my previous work experiences. After completing my service, the German Youth Hostel Federation offered me a position as an assistant hostel general manager. This achievement pushed me to study hotel management while continuing to work, as I was eager to learn and grow in the industry. I have always been passionate about interacting with people, both guests and employees. Their feedback has been my main motivation, and it solidified my love for the hospitality industry.

Q: Your job has taken you around the globe. What is your most favourite thing about moving around?

A: Moving around the globe has indeed been an incredible journey for me. My favourite aspect of moving around is the opportunity to learn about different people and their cultures. I enjoy building and leading successful teams, working with diverse groups in various environments. This enriching experience has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally.

Q: Moving forward, what plans do you have in store for Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort?

A: My primary goal for Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort is to maintain and elevate the high standards that our guests have come to expect from us. We will continue to invest in our facilities, services, and staff training to ensure that we consistently deliver exceptional experiences for all our visitors.

One of the key areas we are focusing on is the introduction of new and innovative products. We will be exploring unique dining experiences, wellness programmes, and curated activities that showcase the best of Bali’s culture and natural beauty. By offering our guests a diverse range of experiences, we aim to create lasting memories and make their stay at Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort truly unforgettable.

Q: You’ve been in the industry for a long time. How do you think the hospitality industry differs now from when you first started?

A: The advancements in technology have had a substantial impact on the hospitality industry. When I first started, the internet was still in its infancy, and online booking platforms were just beginning to emerge. Today, technology is an integral part of the industry, from online bookings and digital marketing to the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics for personalising guest experiences.

Another significant change is the shift in guests’ needs and expectations. Modern travellers are increasingly focused on experiences, sustainability, and wellness. They seek unique, authentic, and personalised experiences that connect them to local cultures and environments. As we move forward, the industry will continue to evolve and innovate, ensuring that it remains an exciting and dynamic field to be a part of.

Q: What is the most memorable or rewarding moment in your career?

A: One of the most memorable and rewarding moments in my career was when I became the youngest hotel general manager in Germany at the age of 21. This achievement was a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that I had put into my career in the hospitality industry from a young age. It was an incredible feeling to receive recognition for my efforts and to be entrusted with the responsibility of managing a Youth Hostel. This milestone not only boosted my confidence but also reinforced my commitment to continually learning and growing within the industry.

Q: What advice do you have for people who want to work in the industry?

A: My primary piece of advice is to be passionate about what you do. The hospitality industry is built on creating exceptional experiences and memorable moments for guests, and this can only be achieved if you genuinely love what you do. In addition, it’s important to continually seek opportunities for personal and professional growth. Another key aspect of working in the hospitality industry is developing excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Finally, be prepared to work hard and demonstrate resilience. In summary, if you are passionate about the hospitality industry and committed to learning, growing, and honing your skills, you will find a rewarding and fulfilling career awaiting you.
