David G. Daguise – General Manager at Pullman Jakarta Indonesia

A seasoned hotelier with various top hospitality brands across his 25 years of experience, David G. Daguise lands in Jakarta to lead one of its most recognisable icons, Pullman Jakarta Indonesia. A dedicated hotelier who has handled everything from beach resorts to city hotels, the Frenchman is excited to face new challenges in his new position. He took the time to talk with us about his journey, and what is ahead for him and the hotel.

Q: Can you summarise your journey so far in the hospitality industry?

A: My journey started more than 25 years ago in Europe. I made my way overseas after that, starting with island resorts in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean before finally arriving in Asia. I worked for different hotel companies and international chains. Three months ago, I took this new position in Pullman Jakarta Indonesia.

Q: Most of your working life has been spent in Asia, is there a reason behind it?

A: Well, Asia has always been a continent that attracted me. So, from the West, I moved slowly and surely to the East – as we call it. I believe Asia is that melting pot where it has exceptional characters, including the people, who are very kind and hospitable. Really, that was what attracted me the most to make Asia as my destination.

Q: During those years working in Asia, and moving on to Jakarta, what has changed between then and now in terms of the hospitality industry?

A: I think a lot of things have changed in the last few years. Of course, when I started 25 years ago, it was very, very much different. I remember still working with a fax machine! First of all, it’s the technology. The way it has evolved in just a short period of time is just amazing. Then there’s the guest expectations, the way people travel and how they get to their destinations have shifted much in their experience and standards for hotels and service. One of the major changes is obviously the arrival of the digital era. It is something that we need to adapt to. The industry is changing in many ways, and to be honest, even more to come ahead.

Q: As the leader of Pullman Jakarta Indonesia, what is it about the hotel that stands out from the rest? What is your competitive edge?

A: Pullman Jakarta Indonesia is part of the history in Indonesia. It’s been running for more than 50 years now. The hotel is basically a landmark for the city, in a perfect location as well. We have excellent food and beverage offerings across many different outlets within the property. I believe those are what makes the difference.

Q: What changes are you making now since you took up the position as general manager?

A: The hotel is going through a new dynamic right now. I think we have becoming more vibrant. There’s a lot of changes coming up, of course I wouldn’t want to reveal everything right now. But I can tell you that we will have many improvements, mostly in the digital side, and also from food and beverage. So, stay tuned!

Q: You have more than two decades of experience in the industry, but which one would you prefer more? Joining a pre-opening team or a pre-existing team?

A: Obviously two of them are different. They’re both as exciting as each other, and basically have different mindsets, which make it really difficult to choose one or the other. To open a property, work on a project and build a team are very exciting. So are joining an existing property and injecting a new dynamic into it. I can’t choose, really. Let’s just say I like them both.

Q: In your own words, what are the most important qualities for a successful general manager?

A: First of all, you have to be passionate. You have to be curious. You have to be witty. And you shouldn’t be scared of taking risks. A general manager’s career is made of decisions, and it is made of risks as well. Of course, the most important thing is always to have that determination to achieve your goals.

Q: After a hectic week, how do you unwind?

A: Well, I like to spend time with my family, as the rest of the week is mostly dedicated to work. Usually we go out, explore the city or country, and sometimes we just stay at home with the cat and do a bit of gardening.

Q: Do you have any advice for budding hoteliers trying to make it in this industry?

A: Be passionate, be curious, don’t be afraid of changes, and you also have to be very flexible. One last piece of advice, don’t be scared to follow your dreams.
