Desak Made Intan Sari – Director of Hygiene, Safety & Sustainability at The Apurva Kempinski Bali

Desak Made Intan Sari

Q: How would you describe your responsibilities?
A: Striving for continuous sustainable implementations encompassing the environment, social and governance.

Q: What makes a typical day in your line of work?
A: Research and development take up the majority of my day. This includes exploring new initiatives to be implemented in the resort, sustainability-related awards and certifications and potential partners for future collaborations. At the same time, I also monitor and evaluate the progress of the current initiatives. Lastly, I am also responsible for hygiene and safety compliance throughout the resort, which involves regular audits and liaising with third-party labs.

Q: What steps has the resort taken to minimise its environmental impact?
A: Through collaborations, we actively work to reduce the environmental impacts and risks, including decarbonisation and sourcing locally. Sustainable initiatives at the resort include the Electric Vehicle Experience with Nissan Indonesia, a solar panel charging station built in partnership with Bank Central Asia and Danone Indonesia, a rooftop hydroponic garden, along with adopting sustainable menus at our dining venues, and we’re on a mission to preserve Indonesia’s forgotten biodiversity in collaboration with Javara Indonesia on our recently launched Majapahit Imperial Dining.

Q: In what ways does the resort engage with the local community to promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices?
A: We have implemented several community engagement programmes, exemplified by our Sustainable Agriculture programme and the APURVA Bersih movement. The latter involves both the local community and our team members in a collaborative effort towards cleanliness and the wellbeing of our surrounding area. Moreover, our Apurva Bipartite community is actively driving social activities with communities across Bali, bringing engagement beyond our internal team to the outside of the hotel. Meanwhile, we engage with local businesses and communities to showcase Indonesia’s arts and crafts at Asha Curated Boutique & Gallery.

Q: Can you share any upcoming sustainability initiatives or projects that the resort is planning to implement?
A: Sustainability will continue to be at the heart of our brand strategy for the coming five years. In addition to the already-implemented initiatives, we will be focusing on decarbonisation and biodiversity preservation initiatives. Among those, we are excited to launch a free-range chicken farm in collaboration with Samsara Living Museum this year.

Q: What’s the toughest part of your job?
A: I think reshaping people’s perspectives poses the biggest challenge in implementing any initiatives, which also apply to other lines of work. Different levels of awareness and consciousness, as well as one’s background, affect their perspectives and willingness to accept and adjust.
