Ian Kusuma – Director of Marketing & Communications at Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach

Ian Kusuma

Q: How would you describe your responsibilities in under 10 words?
A: A fast train ride on a daily basis!

Q: What makes a typical day in your line of work?
A: A meeting with the internal team is usually the first thing I do in the morning after checking emails to make sure everyone has a response. After that, I have a few appointments with friends in the media or clients before lunch. When a specific photoshoot is scheduled for the upcoming campaign, I typically oversee the process to ensure optimal outcomes while planning the next creative concept. Before leaving for home, I always make sure to check my email one last time and double-check everything on my to-do list.

Q: What is the plan for your day off?
A: Even on my days off, I like to stay active. My weekends usually begin with a 10K run or HYROX class, and then I have a cup of coffee at one of the Canggu neighbourhood cafés. On a rainy day, this would be watching movies, going to the malls or maybe getting massages.

Q: What’s the toughest part of your job?
A: A major responsibility in marketing and communications is ensuring that our target audience is paying attention to us. At the same time, we must always maintain realism when working with the hotel’s operational team. While I would not say it is the hardest, let us all agree that we always give it our best shot.

Q: What do you find most satisfying in your job?
A: Being able to spread the word and increase awareness of the property or brand that I am representing in a variety of ways, including activations, advertising, partnerships and many more.

Q: Who has been the most influential figure in your career?
A: A former co-worker of mine. He was my direct reporting in the company, and one day he said, “The success of my team is my success!”

Q: Name one really special thing about your hotel.
A: Hotel Indigo’s brand, Neighborhood, is a reflection of its ongoing reliance on the neighbourhood and local amenities. This is shown through its design, service culture, F&B and activities. This suggests that there are not any two Hotel Indigo properties that are alike anywhere in the world, so going there will let you experience something different every time.

Q: Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.
A: I adore India as a travel destination, even though I am not the biggest fan of Indian cuisine. It truly is beautiful, and I cannot wait to visit again!

Q: If you had not taken this career path, what would you have chosen?
A: As a flight attendant, perhaps? I have always had a great deal of respect for this line of work, not only because of its reputation and the fun it brings to see the world, but also because of all the little details that go into it that most people are rarely even aware exist.
