Gede Suteja – General Manager at COMO Shambhala Estate

A Leader in Wellness

Perched in the lush heart of Ubud, COMO Shambhala Estate is more than a luxury retreat, it’s a sanctuary where nature, culture and wellness converge. In this exclusive interview, Gede Suteja shares how Balinese heritage, heartfelt service and a deeply personal approach to wellbeing create transformative experiences for guests from around the world.

Q: You’ve had an impressive career path across renowned hospitality brands before joining COMO. What key experiences have shaped your leadership style today?
A: I began my career 26 years ago, starting from the bottom. Each step taught me valuable lessons about operations and, importantly, about people.

I’m fortunate to work with a loyal and passionate team that treats one another like family. This same warmth naturally extends to our guests. At COMO Shambhala Estate, our service is rooted in sincerity, grace and gratitude, qualities that guests frequently remark upon. This culture of mutual respect and wellbeing is, for me, the essence of leadership and what makes the Estate so special.

Q: COMO Shambhala Estate is known for its deep commitment to holistic wellness. How do you uphold and evolve that ethos while staying authentic to its roots in Bali?
A: I firmly believe in the importance of being well, physically, mentally and spiritually. Shambhala signifies harmony, and that philosophy shapes everything we do. We combine time-honoured healing traditions with modern science. Every touchpoint is designed to provide an integrated wellness experience, from personalised consultations and nourishing COMO Shambhala Cuisine to outdoor adventures and mindfulness practices.

Wellness is not just a passing trend in Bali; it’s part of the island’s soul. Ubud, whose name derives from ubad (medicine), has been a centre of healing for centuries. Our Estate is situated between the Tibakauh and Ayung rivers, anchored by a revered natural spring. This site has long been regarded as sacred; local history tells of high priests who once meditated here, drawn by its restorative energy. The combination of natural beauty, spiritual heritage and heartfelt service creates a setting where transformation feels inevitable.

Q: Wellness hospitality is a niche space. What drew you to this particular  industry, and what continues to inspire you about it?
A: Working in wellness is deeply fulfilling because it allows us to play a role in a guest’s personal transformation. As lifestyles evolve, so too do the health concerns we address. Years ago, issues like poor sleep, anxiety and digital overstimulation were far less common; now, they are central to wellness discussions. The need to adapt our approach to meet these shifting needs is both a challenge and a constant source of inspiration.

Q: Many guests come seeking more than just a holiday. How do you create an experience that feels both personal and transformative?
A: From the moment guests arrive, we listen to their needs and goals, even to the things they may not articulate. This enables us to curate a journey that feels uniquely theirs, whether that involves a structured programme or an intuitive day-to-day flow.

Every detail matters. Our wellness experts, therapists, and activity guides work in harmony to create moments that nurture and inspire, from personalised nutrition plans and mindful movement sessions to guided nature walks and quiet reflection at our sacred spring. Guests feel our genuine care, and that trust allows them to fully embrace the experience.

Q: What does wellbeing mean to you personally, and how do you live it?
A: To me, wellbeing means a healthy body, a peaceful mind and positive energy, not just for myself but for those around me. As a hospitality leader, I can give my best only if I am centred and in good health. I strive for balance through small, consistent habits, such as morning exercise, mindful breathing, nourishing food and quiet moments for reflection. Equally important is the energy we bring into every interaction. I lead with positivity, empathy and authenticity, setting the tone for the team and embodying the philosophy we share with guests: that wellbeing is a way of life.

Q: As a Balinese, how has your personal connection to the island influenced the way you welcome and engage with guests at COMO?
A: In Balinese culture, hospitality is second nature. Serving others is not merely a gesture; it’s part of daily life. I take pride in our traditions and love sharing them with guests. Bali’s beauty is undeniable, but its soul lies in its people. The warmth of our welcome, the grace of our ceremonies and the rhythm of daily offerings all contribute to a unique atmosphere.

Q: Lastly, what’s one thing you hope every guest walks away with after staying at COMO Shambhala Estate?
A: I hope they leave with a deeper understanding of their own wellbeing and an appreciation for its importance. More than just a restful escape, I want their time here to inspire balance and harmony, enabling them to return to daily life with clarity, energy and inner peace.
