Pascal Caubo – Cluster General Manager of InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar & Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar

Blending Vision with Values

With decades of international experience, Pascal Caubo has led prestigious IHG properties across the globe, from Vietnam to Egypt and now to Indonesia. As the Cluster General Manager of InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar and Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar, he shares what drives him, how he builds strong teams and his vision for evolving hospitality landscape in the city.

Q: What made you move to Bandung after spending a considerable amount of time in Vietnam?
A: After an incredible journey in Vietnam, where I had the privilege of leading InterContinental Nha Trang and InterContinental Saigon through significant growth, I was inspired by the opportunity to bring that experience to Bandung. Managing InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar and later opening Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar represented an exciting next step for me. It allowed me to support a dynamic market while embracing Indonesia’s culture and energy.

Q: Your career has taken you worldwide, from the United States and Egypt to China and Indonesia. What are the key differences you’ve noticed while working here compared to other countries?
A: Every market has its own rhythm. The US and Europe tend to focus on efficiency and structure, while Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, thrives on warmth, attentiveness and human connection. Success in Indonesia requires an understanding and respect for local culture while aligning with international standards. The hospitality scene here is vibrant and fast-paced, making it especially rewarding.

Q: It has been almost eight years since you started working at InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar, and now you are also leading Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar. What motivates you to continue helping these properties flourish?
A: Hospitality is more than just a job for me; I genuinely enjoy it. Leading InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar over the past eight years has been a fulfilling experience, as I have witnessed it develops into a top-tier destination. Taking on Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar added a new dimension that challenges me differently. Seeing both properties thrive and deliver memorable guest experiences keeps my motivation strong.

Q: You started your career as a front office worker and worked your way up to general manager. How did you achieve success, and what valuable lessons have you learned along the way?
A: I’ve always believed in leading by example. Starting in the front office showed me how every role matters, and it shaped my leadership to be hands-on, team-oriented and down-to-earth. One important lesson I learned is that building a strong workplace culture is just crucial as hitting financial targets. When the team feels supported and respected, everything else follows. My guiding principle is simple: treat your team the way you want to be treated.

Q: What is the most memorable moment in your career?
A: Launching Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar stands out to me. Being involved from the pre-opening phase to the hotel’s recognition as the best new opening in 2024 was a proud moment. It reflected not just a great product, but also the dedication and vision of our team.

Q: What do you think is the most important trait to have in your work and industry?
A: Adaptability. The hospitality industry never stands still, and being able to evolve with it is essential. At the same time, strong leadership, financial awareness and empathy for guests and team members are all key attributes. Ultimately, success in this field comes down to people and relationships.

Q: Tell us one thing about yourself that not many people know.
A: I’m passionate about mentoring. Within IHG, I work closely with future GM candidates, offering guidance and sharing insights. I find it personally rewarding to help guide the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Q: What plans do you have in store for both properties?
A: We’re focused on elevating both brands to new heights. At Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar, we’re adding new floors and a rooftop lounge to enhance our lifestyle offerings further. On the other hand, we’ve proudly launched Karbon, our bold and vibrant rooftop destination that’s already creating buzz in the city’s social scene.

We’re also expanding our events and wedding segments while upholding service excellence across both properties. Our vision is clear: to lead the Bandung market in luxury and lifestyle hospitality, offering distinctive experiences that leave a lasting impression.
