By transforming a former railway site, Lausanne’s creative scene is experiencing a vibrant resurgence, breathing new life into the city’s cultural landscape.
Just a few steps from the main train station in Lausanne, a former railway site has been reimagined into one of Switzerland’s most compelling cultural districts. Plateforme 10 stretches across a 25,000-square-metre esplanade, bringing together three canton-level museums and two foundations in a rare concentration of artistic energy.
The transformation began in 2019 with the opening of the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts or Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA), a striking new building that set the tone for the district’s ambitions. In 2022, the venue was joined by Photo Elysée and mudac, creating a dynamic trio dedicated to the fine arts, photography, and design. Together, they form not just a museum complex, but a living arts neighbourhood.
The site’s industrial past subtly informs its identity. The Signal L installation, inspired by railway semaphore lights, invites artists to illuminate the Canton of Vaud from new perspectives, reinforcing Plateforme 10’s commitment to experimentation and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Dining at Plateforme 10 is anchored by two distinct spots that emphasise local, sustainable flavours. Located within the MCBA, Le Nabi offers a creative and primarily vegetarian menu featuring seasonal dishes, local trout, and a popular Sunday brunch. For a more casual vibe, Café Lumen serves gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads, and artisanal coffee, making it the perfect pitstop for a quick, high-quality bite between exhibitions.
Plateforme 10 is more than just a museum district; its cafés and shops make it a top social spot and a highlight of Switzerland’s modern creative scene. By blending high-end design with open public spaces and terraces, the esplanade transforms from a museum campus into the definitive spot to experience the pulse of modern Swiss culture.
