The Great Garuda

One of the biggest milestones for the island of Bali last year was the inauguration of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue. After a long wait, people could finally be amazed by the majestic statue when the park opened its doors for the first time in September. The inauguration was attended by none other than the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. H. Joko Widodo, who symbolically launched the statue by signing his name on the ark and siren.

Held at and by GWK Cultural Park – the corporate subsidiary division of PT Alam Sutera Realty Tbk, the event carried the theme “Merajut Indonesia Esa” and saw a variety of entertainments, including a cultural performance with 300 dancers, choreographed by Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem – respected dancer, artist and writer. The evening also saw the Bumi Gamelan Orchestra led by Balinese guitar maestro and ethnic music specialist I Wayan Balawan.

The majestic inaugural event marked the GWK Cultural Park’s readiness to become an international-scale multi event venue, as proven with the success of the Djakarta Warehouse Project X (DWPX) music festival held at the park in December.

After the completion of the statue, Alam Sutera Group has announced its commitment to continue developing the 60-hectare GWK Cultural Park to become a cultural destination. In addition to the regal statue, the park also aims to accommodate cultural expression through performances – be they indoor or outdoor. The current development aspires to complete the park with tourist facilities, including a cultural centre, garden, meeting rooms, restaurants, hotel and parking area.
