Shaped by early memories of warm hospitality, Alan Muhammad Yuslan has grown into a leader who places heart and authenticity at the centre of his work. This foundation continues to guide him at Hotel Tentrem Jakarta, demonstrating how tradition and modern comfort can naturally come together when human connection remains the focus.
Q: What first drew you into the world of hospitality, and how did that journey eventually lead you to Hotel Tentrem Jakarta?
A: My journey began with a childhood memory of walking into a hotel and feeling the warmth, sparkle and the genuine sense of being cared for. That impression remained with me over the years and shaped my career path. When Hotel Tentrem Semarang opened in 2020, my interest in hospitality grew even further. I was fascinated by how the concept of “Tentrem”, which reflects a state of inner peace, could be developed into a brand. In a landscape dominated mainly by international chains, I was curious to see how a local philosophy could be integrated into modern hospitality.
Q: Did you always envision yourself in this line of work, or was there a pivotal moment that changed the course of your career?
A: I have always felt a natural pull towards hospitality; it just felt right from the start. If there was a pivotal moment, it was when I had to choose between pursuing a more corporate, behind-the-scenes role or staying closer to the team and guests on the floor. I decided to remain in direct contact the heartbeat of hospitality, and that decision has shaped the kind of leader I am today.
Q: Managing a luxury property requires more than operational precision; it needs vision. How would you describe your leadership style, and how has it evolved?
A: Managing a luxury property with strong Indonesian roots presents unique challenges. Over time, I have adapted my leadership style to meet these demands. The essence of mengayomi, a nurturing approach deeply rooted in our culture, plays a crucial role in my leadership. I also draw from Javanese values such as unggah-ungguh, which emphasises manners and respect. These cultural traditions are essential principles for building meaningful relationships within our team and our guests.
Q: What kind of culture do you hope to build behind the scenes among your team, chefs, housekeepers and front desk?
A: For me, it is all about teamwork and creating an environment where everyone, from chefs and housekeepers to the front office team, shares the same goal: delivering meaningful and memorable guest experiences. When we work together as one, we create moments that matter for our guests and make daily life more fulfilling and rewarding for the team.
Q: Hotel Tentrem is known for its quiet elegance and rootedness in Indonesian heritage. How do you balance local cultural richness with the expectations of global luxury travellers?
A: Great service can be found anywhere, but what sets us apart is our genuine warmth. At Tentrem, hospitality is not something we have to force; it’s simply part of who we are. We take pride in introducing our guests to the richness of Indonesian culture while ensuring they feel completely at ease, regardless of where they come from or what brings them here.
Q: How do you envision the future of hospitality in Indonesia, and what role do you see Hotel Tentrem playing in that landscape?
A: Indonesia’s hospitality landscape is undergoing an exciting transformation, blending cultural heritage with technology and sustainability. Hotel Tentrem Jakarta is proud to be part of this shift, demonstrating how traditional Javanese values can coexist with modern luxury and a more responsible approach to tourism.
Q: A piece of advice you live by?
A: Live fully, lead with heart and enjoy the journey. In your career or personal life, finding your rhythm and staying grounded is important. Running has always been a space for me to recharge, reflect and stay inspired. Whatever your outlet may be, make time for it, as it keeps you human, balanced and ready for whatever comes next.
