Since its founding in 1989, the Mason Adventure name has been a fixture in Bali’s thriving tourism scene, evolving from a single white-water raft to an ecosystem that includes thrilling ATV rides, helicopter tours, and even gourmet chocolates. Among the most unique in the family-owned and -operated portfolio is Mason Elephant Park, which introduced the island’s first and only dedicated rescue facility for Sumatran elephants displaced by deforestation and poaching. Though it has attracted a steady stream of visitors (Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and songstress Alicia Keys are some examples), it wasn’t until 2009 that guests were treated to a full immersive experience with the arrival of Mason Elephant Lodge.
The boutique 30-room hotel integrates with the sprawling 4.5-hectare park that resembles the jumbo mammals’ Sumatran jungle habitat; the cool highland breezes of central Bali only complete the atmosphere. Wooden bungalows and safari-style accommodations situate guests within the largest herd of the critically endangered species in Bali. It allows for an up-close and personal encounter with the gentle giants, both for young explorers getting their first introduction to nature and for older individuals who are kids at heart.
This breezy dual destination offers plenty to enjoy, from strolls through the museum that delves deeper into the animals’ history to an elephant art gallery and even screenings of their documentary which highlights the park’s history and ethos. To soak in the picturesque environs from a higher vantage point, guests can venture up to the elevated walkways or settle into the Treetop Café’s tables overlooking the elephants roaming and bathing below. The park also features opportunities to interact directly with the animals through feeding, walking, and bathing sessions.
Highlights:
- 30 boutique rooms set within sprawling lawns where elephants roam beyond the terraces.
- Feeding sessions, Jumbo Wash, and more activities that allow guests to get up close with the elephants.
- Access to the museum and education centre, with a rare display of a complete mammoth skeleton replica, to learn more about the species.
