L’Atelier by Cyril Kongo once again hosted the Anthology of Indonesian Music series, an evening that took guests on a time-travelling trip across decades of the nation’s popular music.
With such a long and diverse history, Indonesia undeniably carries substantial cultural weight. Music is one of its pillars, evolving as post-colonisation global influences fuse with indigenous traditional music to create distinctly Indonesian genres and styles. Much of this journey is mapped in Anthology of Indonesian Classical Music, a definitive enchiridion penned by the Jakarta Arts Council. This serves as the foundation by which The Apurva Kempinski Bali built its The Anthology of Indonesian Music programme, which had its seventh iteration at L’Atelier by Cyril Kongo on 28 March 2026.
This edition welcomed pedagogue and maestro Budi Utomo Prabowo, the conceptual mastermind behind the anthological book’s first edition, Vocal and Piano Seriosa. He was joined by esteemed composer Aksan Sjuman, leading an insightful conversation that dove deeper into the cultural touchpoints of Indonesian seriosa throughout the 1950s to 1980s.
Interspersed in between are soulful jazz renditions of songs from the nation’s vintage library performed by Nada 1928. Each nostalgic number is furthered by Budi and Aksan’s talk segments that explore the historical narratives and cultural significance behind each piece.
“With every edition of Anthology of Indonesian Music, our desire to go deeper only grows: to present the music, the full power and story behind it, particularly for younger generations who deserve to know this inheritance. At The Apurva Kempinski Bali, we have never seen our role as simply building a hotel or curating experiences that revolve around our own facilities. We are here to leave a legacy, to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia’s cultural craftsmanship and to ensure its stories endure,” shared General Manager Vincent Guironnet.
