Starbucks Indonesia Opens its First Signing Store

The store aims to create equal opportunities for the local deaf, hard-of-hearing, and sign-language communities.

Located in Tata Puri building, near Dukuh Atas MRT Station, a very popular spot right in the heart of the city, marking a celebration of inclusivity in one of Jakarta’s most prominent neighbourhood. This is the brand’s 17th Signing Store globally, as well as only the 2nd Community Store in Jakarta and Indonesia. Designed with inclusivity and accessibility at its core, customers will be served by deaf and hard-of-hearing baristas in their new green aprons.

United by the culture of sign language, this store is filled with design elements that bring communities together. The signature siren logo with Indonesian sign language illustration is immediately visible as customers pass the busy adjacent main road, Jalan Sudirman. The most notable feature is a 4-metre-high mural painting by deaf artist, Indira Natalia, which extends more than 11m outside the store, and can be seen by passersby in the street.

The store’s presence was met with enthusiasm long before its opening. More than 150 deaf and heard-of-hearing future baristas from all over the country applied, which ranges from former para-athletes to fashion models. Another monumental achievement for the brand, which also celebrating its 20th year in the country.
