Legacy in Motion
From corporate HR to leading one of Jakarta’s most recognised hotels, Fajar Sukarno has built a career rooted in people, purpose and progress. His approach blends heritage with innovation, inspiring young hospitality professionals through mentorship, structured career pathways and a commitment to Indonesian identity on the global stage. For him, leadership is measured not just in results, but in the growth of those who follow.
Q: What inspired you to move from a corporate HR role to becoming general manager of a hotel property?
A: I hold a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Management in Human Resources from Padjadjaran University. After advancing through various HR roles to Senior Vice President at ARYADUTA Hotel Group, I became General Manager of ARYADUTA Menteng in 2021. I applied my HR expertise to recovery strategies, focusing on talent development, service improvement and linking staff capability with guest satisfaction.
Q: Being the first Indonesian General Manager at ARYADUTA Menteng is a significant milestone. How do you see this achievement influencing Indonesia’s next generation of hospitality professionals?
A: Becoming the first Indonesian General Manager of ARYADUTA Menteng is both a personal milestone and a signal of possibility for the next generation of hospitality professionals. Representation inspires action when emerging talent sees local leaders at landmark properties. Indonesia has the creativity and cultural intelligence to compete globally, yet young professionals need structured pathways, skills training and mentorship. I aim to provide this through apprenticeships, cross-department rotations and academic partnerships. I also work to preserve cultural authenticity, raise service standards and encourage innovation, ensuring that more local leaders shape a hospitality industry that is proudly Indonesian and globally competitive.
Q: ARYADUTA Menteng has just turned 51. What are some of the challenges and responsibilities that come with managing such a legacy property?
A: Established in 1974, ARYADUTA Menteng marks its 51st anniversary with the vision “To become the leading premier Indonesian hospitality group, providing spaces and experiences that foster deeper connection.” Staying competitive means maintaining high product and service standards through selective refurbishments, strong maintenance and refreshed F&B offerings. Service excellence is upheld with measurable standards, guest feedback and empowered teams trained in personalised care. Managing this landmark involves balancing heritage with relevance, ensuring it remains a valued part of Jakarta’s hospitality landscape.
Q: What does being a leader mean to you, and how has that mindset helped you and your team during challenging times?
A: Leadership is about purpose, principle and presence, guided by Ki Hajar Dewantara’s Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha (lead by example), Ing Madya Mangun Karso (inspire from within) and Tut Wuri Handayani (support from behind). These values keep our team grounded, motivated and empowered, enabling us to stay united and agile during challenging times at Hotel ARYADUTA Menteng.
Q: What are your long-term goals for ARYADUTA Menteng?
A: My long-term goal for ARYADUTA Menteng is to strengthen its position as one of Jakarta’s most respected hospitality landmarks. We will invest in innovation and adopt new systems to enhance guest experience and efficiency while preserving our Indonesian heritage through service, design and cultural touchpoints. I want the hotel to inspire pride among our staff and loyalty among guests, embodying a legacy that balances modern hospitality with tradition, where technology enhances human connection and excellence is delivered with authenticity.
Q: With your extensive experience in hospitality, is there any moment you’ll never forget?
A: One moment I will never forget is seeing team members I have mentored grow in their careers. Watching them succeed through discipline, effort and hard-earned accomplishments is deeply rewarding. Progress must be earned through learning and facing challenges. As a leader, guiding that journey is a privilege, and witnessing others rise with confidence and integrity reinforces my commitment to developing potential and creating future leaders in hospitality.
Q: Outside of work, what’s something you secretly enjoy?
A: Outside of work, I dedicated my time to my family, especially on weekends, which offers a chance to reconnect, recharge and create meaningful moments. A fulfilling life comes from balancing career ambitions with personal relationships, through intention and respect for boundaries. My family keeps me grounded, providing the clarity that guides my leadership and life. Shared laughter, quiet conversations and simply being present enrich my home, my work and the legacy I hope to leave behind.
