Scholars of Sustenance Launches Christmas Food Donation Campaign

The food rescue organisation Scholars of Sustenance calls on Bali’s hospitality and business community to turn everyday staples into hope for families in remote Karangasem.

As the festive season approaches, Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) is calling on Bali’s hospitality industry and wider private sector to come together for its annual Christmas Food Donation Campaign. Launched in Sanur on 14 December 2025, the initiative aims to provide essential food supplies to vulnerable families in the remote Karangasem regency, ensuring no one is left behind during the holidays.

SOS Bali is seeking donations of everyday staple items including rice, cooking oil, eggs, flour, canned food, milk, meat and poultry. These contributions will be carefully packed into food parcels and distributed to communities that often see little benefit from Bali’s peak tourist season.

All donations must be received by 19 December 2025. Contributors can drop items directly at the SOS office on Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 53 in Sanur. For hotels, suppliers and supermarkets with larger quantities, SOS also offers a convenient pick-up service. The care packages will be delivered during the week of 22 December, bringing both nourishment and festive cheer to families in need.

Founded in 2016 by Bo H. Holmgreen, Scholars of Sustenance is an independent, non-profit organisation operating across Bali, Jakarta, Thailand and the Philippines. Its mission centres on rescuing surplus food, feeding communities and reducing carbon emissions caused by food waste. SOS operates without government affiliation and relies entirely on private sector and individual support, ensuring donations move through a transparent supply chain directly to those who need them most.

“Christmas is a time of giving, but for many in remote parts of Bali it remains a time of hardship,” said Eka Widya Astutik, Operational Manager at SOS Bali. “A simple donation, whether a bag of rice or a tray of eggs, can make a real difference.”

To date, SOS has delivered more than 85 million meals across Southeast Asia, supporting orphanages, foundations and villages in need.
