This year, Bali Island School became the host of the fourteenth island-wide Model United Nations, welcoming around 140 students from seven schools for two days of debates that sharpen young minds.
As globalisation continues to blur national borderlines and democratise civilisation, there’s a rise in demand for education that equips students with an intercultural perspective that would better help with their transition into today’s society. One way Bali Island School responds to this is its participation in Bali Model United Nations (MUN). Taking it a step further, the school played host for this year’s iteration, held on 31 January – 1 February 2026.
Bali Island School welcomed Grade 5-12 students from Green School, Taman Rama Intercultural School, Taman Rama School Denpasar, Dyatmika School, Canggu Community School, and Sumbawa’s Amman Academy (the only participant from outside of the island) alongside its own delegates. Approximately 140 of them engaged in lively debates on pressing sociopolitical topics that sharpen critical-thinking minds, open perspectives, acclimate them to embrace diversity, and help them gain a deeper understanding on real-world problems. It allows the young generation to not only engage with relevant global issues but also develop leadership skills.
“Model United Nations gives students rich opportunities to build both subject knowledge and practical skills,” said Alan Furnas, Diploma Programme Business Management and Middle Years Programme Individuals & Societies Teacher. “Students often wrestle with research, writing, collaboration, public speaking, and representing a country’s perspective, challenges that directly strengthen the International Baccalaureate Approaches to Learning, especially research, communication, social, and self-management skills. MUN also offers meaningful CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) through leadership, teamwork, and reflection.”
