Translating cultural history into modern clothing requires a delicate balance of respect and innovation. On 3 June 2026, the Indonesia Young Fashion Designer Competition (IYFDC) challenged emerging talents to find this exact equilibrium during its semi-final round at Lippo Mall Nusantara in Jakarta. From an initial pool of over 200 sketches submitted from across the country, 50 semi-finalists presented their initial visions. This rigorous selection process ultimately revealed 12 promising designers advancing to the final stage.

The selected finalists will showcase their collections at the BTN Indonesia Fashion Week 2026, running from 29 July to 2 August 2026 at the Jakarta International Convention Center. This year, the overarching event highlights the theme Threads of North Sumatra: Tradition in Contemporary Silhouette. Participants must interpret the region’s historical textiles and philosophical values into accessible everyday apparel. The initiative encourages a fresh perspective on local heritage to suit current industry demands.

The selection process focused heavily on practical execution alongside creative ambition. A judging panel featuring APPMI executives Misan Kopaka and Naniek Rachmat evaluated each garment for its visual appeal and construction quality. They also closely examined the practical wearability alongside the commercial viability of the proposed designs. APPMI Chairwoman Poppy Dharsono noted that the core goal is to develop capable professionals ready to compete globally.
The upcoming runway presentation offers these young creators a critical platform to launch their careers before a wide audience. By reimagining traditional elements for a modern market, the 12 finalists represent a confident new chapter for the local fashion sector.
