Racing Towards The Future

Rully Habibie – Vice President for Business Development at the Mandalika Grand Prix Association

From world-class motorsport to luxury lifestyle ambitions, Rully Habibie, Vice President for Business Development at the Mandalika Grand Prix Association, shares how Mandalika is evolving into one of Asia’s most exciting destinations. Combining spectacular natural beauty, international racing credentials, and a growing investment landscape, Mandalika is positioning itself as far more than a racing circuit, but a destination with global aspirations.

Q: What makes Mandalika stand out among international racing destinations?
A: Mandalika offers something very few circuits in the world can match: breathtaking natural surroundings. The circuit sits alongside the sea and is framed by mountains, creating a truly unique backdrop for motorsport. Many riders and drivers, including MotoGP stars, often tell us that racing in Mandalika is about more than competition. It’s about experiencing one of the most beautiful circuits in the world.

Q: What does hosting the GT World Challenge Asia mean for Mandalika?
A: The GT World Challenge Asia is one of the region’s most prestigious motorsport events, and we are proud to host it for the second year. What makes this series unique is that it brings together business leaders, investors, and motorsport enthusiasts who race alongside professional and semi-professional drivers. Many participants have told us that coming to Mandalika feels as much like a holiday as it does a race weekend, thanks to the scenery, hospitality, and overall experience.

Q: Beyond the racing action, what experience do you hope visitors get from Mandalika and take away?
A: We want visitors to discover everything Mandalika has to offer. Of course, the circuit is the main attraction, but we also hope guests enjoy the region’s hospitality, culture, and natural beauty. For investors, there are exciting opportunities to contribute to Mandalika’s growth through hotels, resorts, and supporting facilities. Ultimately, we want people to leave with unforgettable memories and a desire to return.

Q: How important are partnerships in shaping Mandalika’s image?
A: Partnerships are essential. Strong relationships with aviation, hospitality, and lifestyle brands help elevate the destination and improve accessibility. While Lombok already has an international airport, we continue to explore new opportunities that make it easier for visitors from around the world to reach Mandalika. Collaboration is the key to our long-term success.Q: How are local communities benefiting from Mandalika’s growth?
A: Community development is one of our proudest achievements. During our first MotoGP event, we relied heavily on international expertise. Today, local talent plays a leading role in delivering major international events. Our marshals, event teams, and volunteers are predominantly from Lombok and surrounding regions. Through training and hands-on experience, we have helped create new skills, opportunities, and a sense of pride within the community.

Q: Where do you see Mandalika in the next five years?
A: I believe Mandalika will continue to grow into a world-class integrated destination. Alongside the circuit, we envision more hotels, resorts, golf courses, and lifestyle attractions. Our long-term ambition is to create a vibrant urban destination where visitors can enjoy luxury experiences, leisure activities, and motorsport all in one place. We are taking it step by step, but the vision is clear.

Q: What upcoming milestones should visitors look forward to?
A: The 2026 MotoGP, taking place from 9-11 October, will be our biggest event of the year. We are aiming to build on the success of previous editions and welcome even more spectators. With Indonesian riders such as Mario Aji and Veda Ega Pratama competing on the international stage, there is growing excitement among local fans. We hope to inspire the next generation of Indonesian motorsport talent while continuing to raise Mandalika’s global profile.

Q: On a personal level, what does Mandalika represent to you?
A: Mandalika represents pride. It combines everything I love about Indonesia: our natural beauty, hospitality, and ambition. Few places in the world can offer such a unique combination of adventure, culture, and world-class sporting facilities. For me, Mandalika is proof of what Indonesia can achieve, and I am incredibly proud to be part of its journey.
