Andreas Kahl – General Manager at Grand Hotel De Djokja

Honouring Heritage, Defining Modern Luxe

Deeply rooted in a profound respect for heritage and history, Andreas Kahl brings a fresh perspective to Grand Hotel De Djokja as it enters its next chapter. Through thoughtful and strong operational standards, sharp discernment, and a strong culture of pride, he seeks to honour the property’s century-old legacy while giving it renewed relevance as a destination in its own right.

Q: Considering the hotel’s prestigious and storied location, how do you approach honouring its legacy while shaping a new direction?
A: When Grand Hotel De Djokja opened in 1912, it was already setting a new standard for luxury in Yogyakarta. Returning to the original name is therefore more than a tribute to the past; it reflects our ambition to once again make this a leading destination for travellers. Storytelling is a big part of that. We now have dedicated Storytellers, daily heritage tours, and our Soedirman Suites to bring those stories to life. We don’t want guests to stay in a landmark hotel; we want them to experience its history.

Q: Having never worked in Yogyakarta before, what has surprised you most about the city’s hospitality landscape, and how has it influenced your approach to leading the hotel?
A: What surprised me most is how much Yogyakarta offers within such a relatively small area. You have Borobudur, Prambanan, and the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis, all recognised by UNESCO. There’s also Malioboro, the Sultan’s Palace, Merapi, and an incredibly rich living culture. That made me realise that our hotel should be part of the destination, rather than simply a base for exploring it.

Q: Every destination has its own definition of luxury. What do you think today’s luxury traveller expects from Yogyakarta, and does Grand Hotel De Djokja respond?
A: To me, luxury starts with genuine hospitality and passionate people who genuinely care about the guest. But today’s luxury traveller also wants something they cannot experience everywhere else. That is where our heritage gives us a real advantage. Through our F&B offerings, Wiji brings a contemporary interpretation of Pan-Asian comfort food, while ROSO explores Indonesia’s culinary heritage, which also connects to the building’s heritage.

Q: As the hotel prepares for its next chapter under new management, what do you hope guests will notice first, not just physically, but in the overall experience?
A: The physical transformation is obvious, but what matters more is changing the hotel’s perception and reconnecting it with its heritage. I want guests to immediately feel the combination of Javanese hospitality, history, and contemporary luxury, and I hope the transformation demonstrates that heritage properties in Indonesia don’t have to choose between identity preservation and meeting contemporary standards. You can do both.

Q: Beyond refreshed facilities, what cultural or service philosophies are you hoping to introduce that reflect your own leadership style?
A: An element I believe is important here is pride of place. I want our colleagues to feel empowered to make decisions and create genuine moments for guests while still maintaining strong standards, consistency, and accountability. Theyre not simply operating a hotel; they are representing a building that has stood here for more than a century and a city with an extraordinary cultural identity. That is why we have introduced dedicated storytellers and curated heritage experiences.

Q: What kind of opportunities do you think remain untapped in Yogyakarta, and how do you hope this hotel can help raise the bar?
A: We offer international-standard luxury in the heart of the city. At the same time, our two ballrooms and 18 meeting spaces allow us to host everything from intimate gatherings to large conferences and celebrations. If we can attract more leisure travellers, event organisers, and international visitors to Yogyakarta, then we are contributing not only to the hotel, but also to the city’s position as a world-class destination.

Q: When people look back on this period of transformation, what would you like them to say about the role you played in shaping the hotel’s next chapter?
A: I would be happy if they said I helped unlock the property’s potential. This hotel was here long before me, and hopefully it will still be here long after. Ultimately, I hope people say that we respected the hotel’s history while giving it a new relevance. We are not trying to recreate the Grand Hotel of the past; we are trying to make sure that today’s Grand Hotel De Djokja becomes part of Yogyakarta’s history tomorrow.
