Eugene Kangawa and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE Debut Textile Collaboration at Art Basel Paris

This October at Art Basel Paris, Japanese artist Eugene Kangawa and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE will present a new textile collaboration inspired by Kangawa’s ‘Light and shadow inside me’. The project, developed over three years, translates light and shadow into woven form through an innovative ‘bit-level’ fabric. The work will also be part of the permanent collection at the Eugene Museum, designed by Andra Matin and opening in Bali in 2026.

Japanese multidisciplinary artist Eugene Kangawa and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE will unveil a new collaborative project at Art Basel Paris in October 2025. The initiative marks the result of a three-year dialogue between Kangawa and designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae with his team, sparked by Miyamae’s encounter with Kangawa’s painting series ‘Light and shadow inside me’ during the artist’s solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2021.

The collaboration introduces a technically innovative textile inspired by Kangawa’s photogram series ‘Light and shadow inside me‘. Developed by A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, the fabric translates Kangawa’s exploration of light and shadow into weaving. A gradient from black to white is created purely through variations in weave density, without dyes or coloured threads. This bit-level textile represents a new development in material design, echoing the silver particles of photographic paper used in Kangawa’s process.

Kangawa described the project as an opportunity to bring his work into another dimension, expressing gratitude to Miyamae and his team for their careful interpretation of his artistic vision. He emphasised that Issey Miyake’s human-centred philosophy resonates with his own themes of existence, adding that he is excited for audiences in Paris to experience the works before they become part of the forthcoming Eugene Museum in Bali.

Scheduled to open in Tabanan, Bali in 2026, the Eugene Museum will permanently house ‘Light and shadow inside me’ alongside more than 15 other works by Kangawa. Designed by Indonesian architect Andra Matin, the museum will integrate art and nature, offering both gallery spaces and residential programmes for extended engagement.
