At its outset, the premise of The Ungasan Clifftop Resort was simple: seven luxury villas where the only requirements are five bedrooms, a pool that’s at least 20 metres long, an entertaining area, and a cinema. Backed by three key Australian architectural firms, the owners of each sprawling 2,500sqm estate designed their dream houses, resulting in a collection where no two accommodations are the same.
Five of them carry a tropical Balinese style, distinguished by its own unique flair. Pawana, for example, has a floral touch, with bougainvillaea trees lining its stone pathways; Nora’s minimalist interiors flow with ease with an abundance of water features throughout its compound; and Ambar offers utmost quietude and privacy with a subterranean master bedroom.
The two other villas take their inhabitants on a slightly farther journey. Santai Sorga and its regal colonial façade unfolds into an interior with white-and-blue and rattan accents evoking the Mediterranean coast. Meanwhile, Tamarama, named after an oceanside Sydney suburb, is modelled after the mansions of the Hamptons and the Caribbean, with two swimming pools that position guests in the direct path of the setting sun.
Although the villas’ extravagance may be a temptation to stay in, a quick venture out to the resort’s sprawling grounds would lure even the most pragmatic vacationers. waatu is a wonderful alternative to the in-villa dining options with a bounty from its open-flame charcoal grills. Equally as inviting is the crystalline lagoon of Sundays Beach Club, which can be reached by boarding an inclinator that slithers through the dense foliage along the Uluwatu cliffside.
The best part is that these experiences are not limited to villa guests. Travellers in a smaller group can easily enjoy these as part of their stays in the one-bedroom suite options, while outsiders can visit waatu for a bite and Sundays for a day at the beach. These are small ways in which The Ungasan Clifftop Resort extends its bespoke luxuries, which can be personalised however one likes.
