Sustainability is rarely defined by a single grand gesture. More often, it is built through a series of considered choices, how resources are managed, how communities are supported, and how a hospitality destination can lessen its impact while creating meaningful experiences for its guests.
For Merusaka Nusa Dua, that philosophy has been taking shape since 2023. What began with small initiatives has gradually developed into a broader sustainability programme spanning environmental conservation, resource management and community engagement.
In August 2026, these ongoing efforts reached an important milestone as the resort officially received Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Certification, presented by Control Union Indonesia on 14 August. The internationally recognised certification reflects standards covering key areas of sustainable tourism, including environmental, social, cultural and management practices.
At the heart of Merusaka’s approach are initiatives that connect sustainability with everyday operations. Its Boemi Merusaka Organic Garden contributes to a more conscious approach to food and resources, while the resort’s collaboration with Maggot House Bali supports efforts to reduce food waste. Water conservation, regular beach clean-ups and mangrove planting further extend its environmental commitments, alongside coastal conservation and community-focused programmes.
Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone programme, Merusaka Nusa Dua sees these actions as part of its ongoing responsibility as a tourism destination in Bali. The GSTC certification therefore represents not an endpoint, but recognition of a journey that continues to evolve.
For General Manager Ian Cameron, the achievement is a reflection of the dedication shared across the resort’s team. Looking ahead, Merusaka intends to further strengthen its environmental initiatives, responsible practices and engagement with local communities.
Ultimately, the resort’s sustainability story is rooted in a simple idea: meaningful change can begin with small, consistent actions. By continuing to build on those actions, Merusaka Nusa Dua aims to contribute to a more positive future for Bali, its communities and generations to come.
