Theatre lovers are invited to experience the return of Bunga Penutup Abad, adapted from Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Buru Quartet, with three special performances in Jakarta on 29–31 August 2025.
After successful runs in 2016, 2017, and 2018, Bunga Penutup Abad, a theatre production by Titimangsa and presented by Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, is set to return to Jakarta this August. The performance will take place at Ciputra Artpreneur on 29, 30 and 31 August 2025, bringing to the stage once again the enduring works of Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
This production, Titimangsa’s 88th, is adapted from the first two novels of the Buru Quartet, Bumi Manusia and Anak Semua Bangsa. Its return holds special significance as 2025 marks 100 years since the birth of Pramoedya, making the performance part of the year-long Seabad Pram programme organised by the Pramoedya Ananta Toer Foundation.
The story follows the intertwined lives of Nyai Ontosoroh, Minke and Annelies, told through a series of letters from Panji Darman, who accompanies Annelies on her journey to the Netherlands. Themes of love, loss, resilience and social struggle remain central, reaffirming the timeless relevance of Pramoedya’s work.
This year’s staging introduces refreshed elements, with adjustments to the script and enhanced stage design. Director and playwright Wawan Sofwan has reworked the dramatic structure, ensuring the story resonates with contemporary audiences while retaining its literary depth.
The cast features some of Indonesia’s most acclaimed actors: Happy Salma as Nyai Ontosoroh, Reza Rahadian as Minke, Chelsea Islan as Annelies, Andrew Trigg as Jean Marais and Sajani Arifin as May Marais. With a blend of familiar and new faces, the production promises both continuity and renewal.
