Niluh Djelantik & Janet Deneefe

Founded by festival director Janet DeNeefe in response to the 2003 Bali bombings, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is an annual event with the goal of bringing together some of Indonesia’s writers with some of the world’s best. This year’s festival will run from 18 to 22 October 2023. Since its debut in 2004, the festival has garnished thousands of new participants yearly, with over 26,000 in attendance in 2014 and over 30,000 in 2015.

The not-for-profit project looks to use its platform to spread awareness of important Bali affairs, such as the island’s battle against plastic, ethical tourism and access to literature for young Indonesians. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival looks forward to resuming its live event for the 19th year running this October.
