After its highly anticipated arrival last March, Capella Kyoto sets a daringly modern precedent for the city’s heritage-oriented hospitality scene. Located in the historic Miyagawa-cho district, the 89-room property transformed the former Shinmichi Elementary School site into a destination for cultural rediscovery, one that is led by bold contemporary artistic statements.
Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates alongside Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, the hotel draws inspiration from Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouses, expressed masterfully through intimately choreographed layered spaces and hidden courtyards that impose a sharp, tasteful line between the public and private realms. In addition, the hotel provides immediate access to Kyoto’s premier heritage sites, including the city’s oldest Zen temple at Kenninji and the famed Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, home to the venerable geiko and maiko performances. Highlights also include six exclusive suites with private onsen, an ochaya-inspired signature restaurant, and a serene tsuboniwa moss garden preserving the site’s original sakura tree.
